What Trucks Need an NY HUT Sticker?

To be subject to New York Highway Use Tax, a vehicle must be used on NY public highways in connection with a business and exceed the gross weight threshold.

A motor vehicle is subject to NY HUT when used on New York State public highways in connection with a business and has a gross weight of more than 18,000 pounds alone or in combination with any trailer.

NY HUT Gross Weight Requirements

The 18,000-pound threshold applies to the taxable gross weight of the vehicle alone or in combination with any trailer. Vehicles with 3 or more axles traveling in New York without IRP registration commonly need HUT credentials.

Even if your truck is just passing through, a permit may still be required depending on your vehicle's weight and axle count. Having the correct HUT credentials helps carriers avoid fines, penalties, and delays during inspections.
